Clinic

Our specialist outpatient service is for patients 16 years and over with diagnosed or suspected intellectual disability and/or autism and who have complex support needs.

Run at Mater Hospital Brisbane, the outpatient service includes our long-standing weekly clinic and newly established Down syndrome clinic. Patients outside South East Brisbane can access the service via telehealth.

Our multidisciplinary clinical team includes psychiatrists, psychiatry registrars, nurses, psychologists, a general practitioner, visiting rehabilitation medicine physician, occupational therapist, speech pathologist and social worker.

Clinic referrals

To attend our clinics, patients need a referral from either a general practitioner or specialist for additional health assessment and advice.

We accept referrals for patients 16 years and over with diagnosed or suspected intellectual disability and/or autism who have heightened complexity and one or more of:

Mental illness or suspected mental illness
Challenging behaviours unresponsive to standard interventions
Physical health conditions or illness where treatment is impacted by their intellectual or developmental disability
Inappropriate use of restrictive practices
Other complexities difficult to manage in mainstream health services

Examples of factors which may contribute to heightened complexity include:

Presence of a confirmed or suspected genetic syndrome
Severe or profound communication issues
Multiple medical and psychiatric comorbidities

Appointments

Appointments are scheduled by the clinic upon acceptance of patient referrals.

Patients and their support people can complete this pre-appointment questionnaire. Please note this does not replace a referral to QCEIDAH made by a general practitioner or medical specialist.
